Best Time to Visit Marrakech

Marrakech can be visited all year round, but the climate changes drastically between January and August. Here's a month-by-month overview to help you choose the period that best suits what you're looking for — between spring mildness, summer heat and winter freshness.

Spring (March to May): the best time, hands down

This is the most recommended season to visit Marrakech. Daytime temperatures range between 20°C and 28°C, with still-cool nights in March. The light is beautiful for photos, the gardens (Majorelle, Secret Garden) are in bloom, and it's the ideal period for excursions to the Agafay desert or the Ourika Valley without suffering from the heat. It's also one of the most in-demand periods: book your activities and accommodation in advance.

Summer (June to August): intense heat, but not impossible

Daytime temperatures often climb above 38-40°C, especially in July and August. It's not the most comfortable time to visit the medina in the middle of the afternoon, but it's still perfectly manageable by adapting your pace:

  • Visit the medina and souks early in the morning or late in the day
  • Book outdoor activities (quad, buggy, hot air balloon) at sunrise or late afternoon
  • Favor accommodation and activities with a pool for the hottest hours
  • Air conditioning is almost always available in high-end villas and riads

The upside of summer: fewer tourists at certain sites, and sometimes better rates on accommodation.

Autumn (September to November): the second best option

From mid-September, temperatures gradually drop back to an average of 25-30°C during the day. Along with spring, it's the most pleasant period to combine a city visit with excursions into the Agafay desert or the mountains. October is often considered an ideal transition month: still warm during the day, cooler in the evening.

Winter (December to February): cool mornings, mild days

Days generally stay mild (18-22°C), but mornings and evenings are cool, sometimes close to 5-8°C. The Atlas peaks, visible from Marrakech, become snow-capped — a striking contrast with the city's palm trees. It's a quiet period, with fewer crowds, ideal if you're looking to avoid the busy season. Bring a few layers for the evenings, especially for outdoor dinners in the desert.

What time of year for which activity?

Hot air balloon flight: possible all year round, but flights can be cancelled in case of strong wind, more frequent in winter. Spring and autumn offer the best visibility conditions.

Desert excursions (quad, buggy, camel): ideal in spring and autumn; in summer, favor morning or late-day departures.

Pool relaxation (Agafay camps, water parks): summer remains the logical season, although the camps stay pleasant in spring thanks to the already-present sunshine.

In summary

If you have a choice, spring (April-May) and early autumn (September-October) offer the best compromise between pleasant weather and activity availability. Summer suits those who handle heat well and adapt their schedule; winter appeals to travelers seeking calm, provided they pack warm clothes for the evenings.
